VimoSEWA’s Insurance Technical Assistance Services (VITAS)

 

In October 2009, National Insurance VimoSEWA Cooperative Limited established VimoSEWA’s Insurance TechnicalAssistance Services (VITAS) in order to provide technical support and partnership in the field of micro insurance.

 

Since 1992, VimoSEWA has introduced various integrated micro insurance schemes which cover both life and non-life risks for women workers and their family members in the informal economy. VimoSEWA’s core principles are:

Self help,
Integrated approach,
Financial viability
Sound insurance principles.
 
Over the past twenty years, VimoSEWA has developed knowledge in programme design, operations and research on micro insurance. It has technical expertise grounded in hands-on implementation experience, having worked with a wide range of partners, ranging from grass root organizations to international agencies.
 
VimoSEWA now offers these skills to others through VITAS which is dedicated to technical support and partnerships to enhance the micro insurance movement in India and abroad.
 
VITAS offers technical support in the following areas
 
Micro Insurance Programme Design
 
(For example: Needs assessment through customized Community Risk Assessment)
   
Micro Insurance Operations
 
(For example: Product Design and Negotiations with Insurance Companies)
   
Monitoring and Evaluation
(For example: Designing monitoring systems)
 
Capacity Building
 
(For example: Training workshops on micro insurance, marketing and insurance domain)
 
 
 

Other areas of expertise of VITAS

 
Technical assistance provider to the ILO Micro insurance Innovation Facility. In addition it has provided technical assistance to the ILO, NGOs in Assam and Sa-Dhan (a federation of microfinance organizations in India) among others.
 
Research capacity especially on feasibility of insurance and implementation mechanisms; experience in action research in partnership with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Harvard School of Public Health and the Indian Academy for Self-Employed Women.
 
Policy action on micro insurance; have served on advisory committees of the Insurance Regulatory Development Authority (IRDA) of India, International Cooperative and Mutual Insurance Federation and the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI).
 
Team members serve as faculty to the Institute of Social Studies, the Hague and visiting lecturers in the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) – Ahmedabad, and the Entrepreneurship Development Institute, Gandhinagar.
